Journeying Behind the Mic!

Jade A. Waters

Hi everyone! I am so tickled that Rose and Big Daddy asked me to join them today—thanks, guys! Rose and Big Daddy have given me one hell of an opportunity by including me in the narration process of The Sexy Librarian’s Dirty 30, Vol. 2 with three sexy ass stories: Rachel Woe’s “Unfinished Business,” Malin James’s “Canvas,” and Rose de Fer’s “Girl Number Twenty.” Talk about a spectacular experience! Each of these stories was such a joy to read, never mind narrate—and the process has been a dream. Today, I’m excited to share about not only my first real narration gig with Stupid Fish Productions (*squee*), but also to talk about how thrilling it’s been to get going in the world of sound! I owe a ton to Rose and Dayv…and it all starts a couple years ago when they invited me to read a live excerpt on The Sexy Librarian’s Big Book of Erotica book tour. That event in itself was fun, but after, they both asked me if I’d ever considered narrating, like…for real.

*Light bulb moment*

Turns out, I had, many years before (in high school, no less, during an acting class with a voice over guest speaker)—but that little dream had been tucked away for decades what with a day job and all the writing I was doing. Still, out of nowhere, it hit me: what a friggin’ great idea! I could be a writer and a narrator. I could aspire to be like Rose in my future. I could switch day jobs and fully live in the literature world writing and narrating and holy hell would that be the coolest life ever or what?!?!

So, I took the idea to heart. I proceeded to pick Rose’s brain on the narration side and Big Daddy’s brain on the setup and production side a lot (thank you both for being so patient and generous with your advice!). At first, I simply padded a closet and did a couple ditties of my own for my website…but a spontaneous and urgent move left me with a crappy closet situation, and I knew I wanted to do this thing for real. Cue a sweet builder best friend who happened to know I was serious, and voila! He offered to help me build My.Very.Own.Booth. OMG yes!

The process took several months for a variety of reasons, and our building conditions were by no means great: I’m on the third floor, and this fucker was getting built mostly in place—in the corner of my bedroom! Let me just tell you, I have never heaved that amount of drywall before, and certainly not up stairs. Also, drywall dust and wood chips are so not great for your sheets. Yikes! Nonetheless, we built and built…and in time, I had my own studio in my room nearly ready to go. Next, I went nuts outfitting the booth with moving blankets, comforters, acoustical foam, etc.…then bought all sorts of sound equipment to accompany other pieces I’d inherited from a few super generous people. From there I ran mic and headphone wires through the wall, modified the ventilation tubes my friend and I had arranged, then built a fake air conditioner out of an ice chest for between takes because, good lord, does that box get hot! (The booth box, people. The booth.) Bonus, Rose and Big Daddy even came to help me get the sound set up (because they’re the greatest people on the planet, have I mentioned?), and then…I was ready to record!

Now, I’d taken a voice over class a year or so before, and I’d listened to Rose a bunch and acted some in my faraway past, which meant I had some background…but this was the test. It was time to narrate under pressure and to actually do a good job for someone other than me on stories that weren’t mine. Eek! There were nerves, retakes, and hiccups (really, food poisoning when I’m trying to read and record?). There were ice cubes in my bra to deal with hot summer days in a tiny little padded box. There were local train schedules I suddenly had to sort out, as well as a neighbor running a potentially ancient radio on a questionable frequency that threw interference into my headphones. There was my darling cat refusing to abide by me locking her out of the room, complete with relentless clawing on the bedroom door that ruined a take until I finally caved and let her in. But, there was also such fun playing characters, acting out beautiful stories and words from some very talented authors, plus, sweet Rose and Dayv rooting me on, giving me tips, making me feel so freaking good to be joining them on this adventure—and to know that in the future, I could do this all the time!

Yessssssssss!!!!

I have a long way to go, but I spent several weeks over the summer learning a thing or five hundred about everything from narration to editing and production. I’ve occupied myself with endless tutorials and research on how to handle various behind the scenes edits: mouth noises, funky breaths, the dreaded sounds of plosives (“p”) and sibilance (“s”), random no-no recording sounds and clips, etc., plus the biz side of things. Every step of the way, what continued to strike me was that no matter how much time I spent at it, I was still having a great ole time. I was learning (which I love), I was planning for my

future (which I love), and it was all while doing

something fun (which, like, hello: I love!). How cool!

All that said, I am truly honored to have been invited to join in on this project. I am also incredibly happy Rose and Dayv planted such an important seed for me, and encouraged me to journey into this field. Heading in that direction is quite possibly the niftiest thing ever—thank you!

Also, a huge thank you to Malin James, Rachel Woe, and Rose de Fer for delicious stories I had a fabulous time narrating (and learning through!). This anthology is smokin’ hot, and I hope you enjoy hearing the whole darn thing as much as I enjoyed narrating these beauties!
